Say ‘hi’ to Damian, one of our Wizards

Q: Hi Damian – what made you want to try Coworking and would you recommend it to others?

A: I saw coworking as a disruptor of my industry. I was introducing coworking operators to my corporate clients as a solution for flexible office space and finding that the operators could offer ‘one-stop-shop’ approach that would replace part of my consulting expertise. I also loved it as a general movement to support the growing trend for more independent workers, and as a dissatisfied corporate employee, wanted to get involved in something more rewarding.

Q: Tell us a little bit about what you’re up to…

A: I still work with large corporates to improve productivity in their workplace, through culture, design and technology change. Right now I’m working on Amazon’s EMEA-wide workplace strategy programme. My passion project is Coworking operating (hence me getting involved with CambridgeSpace) and consulting to those who want to do Coworking (small operators and corporates too).

Q: How long have you been doing this, what did you do before and do you expect to be doing anything else in the future?

A: I’ve been a Workplace Strategy & Change Management Consultant for 14 years, but independent since November last year. I think I’ll be doing this for at least the next few years. I never try to look too far beyond that as I want to be flexible to the ever-changing world.

Q: What is the most common issue you have to deal with and how do you solve it?

A: Planning my week ahead, trying to balance work, kids and relaxing. My wife and I have to meet every week, like a business planning meeting, to ensure we’re ready for each week. We even share calendars. She works in London 3 days a week and me 1 day a week. It’s a continuous juggle!

Q: What practical book / blog post / podcast etc would you recommend?

A: I listen to Joe Rogan’s podcast religiously as he has a diverse range of guests speaking about the world of science, health, entertainment, live improvement and anything he’s interested in. It’s really eclectic so there’s something for everyone.

Q: What is your daily mantra?

A: Stay positive and always give yourself a break (both relaxing and not being overly self-critical).

Q: What productivity hack would you recommend?

A: My memory is incredibly bad and I’m lost without OneNote as it syncs across my phone and laptop.

Q: What music do you listen to when you work?

A: I’m liking dubstep or trap mixes when I’m hitting a deadline and need serious heads-down music. Otherwise, it could be anything from 70s or modern rock to old blues or even 80’s rap music.

Q: Who inspires you and why?

A: Anyone who can make thought-disrupting statements that inspire positive change, like Dr. Carl Hart or Maynard James Keenan

Q: Where are you taking your next holiday and what do you plan to do?

A: I’m off to Madeira during October half term to see my Dad. He’s retired there and has finally bought some beds for us to sleep on!
